Chiben Wakayama sent 11 batters to the plate to erupt for five runs in the fifth inning Monday en route to a 5-2 win over Kanazawa in the second round of the National High School Baseball Championship.

Seven hits in the big inning gave Ryosuke Hiroi all the run support he needed, and the third-year right-hander scattered four hits, allowing no runs in six innings of work at Koshien Stadium. Takanori Takenaka closed out the last three innings giving up two runs.

In other second-round action, Ken Komatani threw a six-hit shutout and helped his own cause with a solo drive in the fourth inning as Fukichiyama Seibi blanked Shizuoka Shogyo 4-0 to reach the third round for the first time ever.

In the day's final game, cleanup batter Takaaki Kariba hit a run-scoring go-ahead double to lift Kumamoto Shogyo to a come-from-behind 5-3 victory over Tenri of Nara to reach the third round of the annual summer tournament for the first time in 10 years.
