Matsui showed up with his arm immobilized in a cast before his team's night game against the Boston Red Sox and played catch on the field with a pliable ball for about 30 minutes with his interpreter Rogelio Kahlon before training for about another hour in the clubhouse facility.

"I was able to have a light workout and I'm feeling no pain," Matsui said at a news conference.

"I'm not exactly sure about the details but I think that it's (my wrist) is getting better. Except for my wrist, there's no problem at all," Matsui said, adding that he plans to gradually increase his training at Yankee Stadium.

Matsui suffered the broken wrist on May 11 when he tried to make a sliding catch on a fly ball to shallow left field in the first inning of a game against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium.

The injury ended his streak of 518 consecutive games played with the Yankees and 1,768 overall in his career, including his stint starting Aug. 22, 1993, in his rookie season with the Yomiuri Giants.

The Japanese slugger has been doing light exercises at home since late May and is expected to begin full-scale workouts after having his cast removed at the end of June.
