Japan has called up FC Tokyo defender Teruyuki Moniwa to join the World Cup squad in Germany, replacing the injured Makoto Tanaka, the Japan Football Association said on Tuesday.

Athens Olympian Moniwa has been drafted in because Tanaka has failed to recover from a hamstring injury he sustained during Japan's final training camp before the team left for Germany last Friday.

Jubilo Iwata defender Tanaka played a key role in helping Japan qualify for the World Cup and was also a member of the team that retained the Asian Cup in 2004.
