SENDAI -- The Hiroshima Carp racked up 16 hits, but their 4-3 win over the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles still came down to a prayer in the 12th inning.

Masafumi Suenaga's RBI double in the top of the 12th was the difference maker in front of the crowd at Fullcast Stadium.

Monday's game was the final of an interleague series between the two teams, and it was a makeup.

Rakuten did not manage a baserunner in the final five innings, leaving it ripe for Hiroshima's breakthrough.

Shigenobu Shima hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to give the Carp a 3-2 lead, but the Eagles answered back in the six, sending the game into a deadlock that almost ended in a tie.

Katsuhiro Nagakawa came on to pick up the win, which ended a four-game losing streak for the Carp, who hold down fifth place in the Central League.

Takahashi out

Yomiuri Giants outfielder Yoshinobu Takahashi was removed from the active roster Monday after being diagnosed with an injured left shoulder expected to require two or three weeks for recovery, the Central League club said.

Takahashi, who hurt his shoulder when diving to make a catch at Tokyo Dome against the Chiba Lotte Marines on Saturday, is likely to miss the rest of interleague play.

It is the second time this season that Takahashi has been deactivated. He strained muscles in his left side in mid-April and was sidelined for nearly a month.

It was more bad news for the Giants, whose bullpen has struggled recently.
