Akira Kaji never imagined a curfew-breaking boozing session involving several Japan internationals would help pave the way for his inclusion in the Asian champions' World Cup squad.

Kaji had only made two appearances for Japan, one as a second-half substitute for naughty Nobuhisa Yamada in the 4-0 win over Malaysia, before the late-night binge in a club 27 months ago.
Urawa Reds star Yamada was one of eight players who were said to have thrown sushi, harassed female staff and caused trouble with other customers during a rowdy night out on Feb. 9, 2004, in Kashima, where Japan were hold a training camp.
