Ozeki Chiyotaikai fell to his first defeat in a bout against Mongolian Asasekiryu on Sunday, leaving him in a three-way tie for the lead with ozeki Hakuho and sekiwake Miyabiyama at the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament.
Chiyotaikai, who is aiming for his career fourth title, never got his trademark thrusting attack rolling in the day's final match and was hoisted over the edge from side by the No. 2 maegashira to slip to 7-1 at Ryogoku Kokugikan. Asasekiryu improved to 6-2.
