Bolton's move came amid speculation in the Japanese sports media that Nakata may leave Bolton after just one season after joining the club on a 12-month loan from Italian outfit Fiorentina.

Nakata began his career in 1995 at J. League side Bellmare Hiratsuka and moved to Italian side Perugia shortly after making his World Cup debut in the 1998 tournament in France.

Nakata also had stints in Italy with Roma, Parma, Bologna and Fiorentina before playing for Bolton, where he appeared in 21 league matches and scored one goal in the 2005-2006 season.
