A header from defender Azusa Iwashimizu gave Japan the lead after three minutes, but Wamback pulled the Americans level with a 40th-minute penalty and added goals in the 72nd and 89th minutes.

The result in Kumamoto left Japan winless against the United States in 17 meetings with three draws and 14 losses.
