Backstroke swimmer Tomomi Morita broke the Japanese record twice on his way to claiming his fifth consecutive 100-meter title at the national swimming championships Friday.
Morita, bronze medalist at the 2004 Athens Olympics, shaved 0.08 off his own mark in winning his heat in 54.12 seconds and then clocked 53.85 in the final at Tokyo Tatsumi International Swimming Center. Masafumi Yamaguchi came second in 54.52 and Junichi Miyashita took third in 54.67. Morita and Yamaguchi met the qualifying standards set by the Japan Swimming Federation for the world championships to be held in Melbourne, Australia, next year.
