Japan will face Puerto Rico in the Kirin Cup in a tuneup for the men's world basketball championships getting under way this August, the Japan Basketball Association said Wednesday.
The host country for the Aug. 19-Sept. 3 event will play Puerto Rico, which beat the United States and came sixth at the 2004 Athens Olympics, in the three-game series opening on July 19 at the White Ring in Nagano.
Both teams will meet again at the Koshigaya municipal gymnasium in Saitama Prefecture two days later, with the third and final game scheduled to take place at Yoyogi national gymnasium annex in Tokyo on July 22.
Puerto Rico, along with host Japan, is one of the 24 teams participating in the world championships, in which six teams will be divided into four groups in a round-robin format in the first round.
