Jeremy Powell pitched his second straight shutout and Takayuki Shimizu singled home the game's only run in the second inning Tuesday as the Yomiuri Giants edged the Yakult Swallows 1-0 to extend their unbeaten streak to nine in the Central League.

Yomiuri Giants hurler Jeremy Powell reacts after pitching a complete-game shutout Tuesday against the Tokyo Yakult Swallows.

Powell (3-0) scattered nine hits and got the Swallows to ground into four double plays, while striking out four and walking none at Muscat stadium in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture. Yomiuri has won three straight, following a 6-6 tie with the Yokohama BayStars last Friday that came after five consecutive wins.

The biggest scare for Powell was the top of the ninth, when Norichika Aoki and Akinori Iwamura singled to put runners on the corners with one out against him.
