Japan is planning to host a top-level international swimming meet in September 2007, the year prior to the Beijing Olympics, Japan Swimming Federation officials said Tuesday.
The move is aimed at filling a void in the competition schedule for summer 2007, with the world swimming championships held normally in the summer being moved earlier to the spring due to the venue, Melbourne, Australia.
Under the federation's plan, the event is expected to be held in a suburb of Tokyo and will have almost all of the Olympic disciplines.
The federation will organize a committee shortly to work out the plan.
