Koji Uehara and Jeremy Powell combined on a three-hitter over five shutout innings against the Hiroshima Carp on Sunday in their final warmups for the Central League regular season.

Uehara allowed a pair of two-out singles in the first inning before retiring the side in order in the second in his first start since stifling South Korean in a 6-0 win in the semifinals of the World Baseball Classic on March 18.

Uehara, who held the Koreans to three hits and struck out eight over seven innings, was making his only spring appearance for Yomiuri five days before his probable start on opening day.

Powell started the third and pitched three innings, giving up a hit and striking out three with no walks and a hit batter. Yomiuri infielder Tomohiro Nioka hit a two-run shot and Shigenobu Shima homered for Hiroshima as the Giants won 4-1 at Hiroshima Stadium.

Domingo Guzman threw three hitless innings and combined with five relievers on a one-hit shutout of Yakult at Nagoya Dome. Chunichi slugger Alex Ochoa had two of the four hits in the game.

Makoto Imaoka, Akihiro Yano and Lin Wei-zhu homered and drove in seven runs between them and Takashi Toritani went 5-for-5 with a pair of doubles for Hanshin, which had 15 hits against Yokohama.
