Yuki Karakawa struck out 10 in a five-hit shutout to lead Narita over Komatsushima 3-0 in the first round of the national high school baseball invitational tournament Thursday.

Karakawa never allowed a runner to third base against the Tokushima school, while Yu Araki singled home the opening run in the sixth among his three hits for the Chiba school on the first day of the 12-day event at Koshien Stadium in Hyogo Prefecture.

In the other first-round games, Chiben Wakayama ace Takanori Takenaka threw a four-hitter in a 4-0 victory over Imari Shogyo of Saga Prefecture.

Hyogo's Shinko Gakuen defeated Nanyo Kogyo of Yamaguchi 4-0 as right-hander Kenta Hayashi scattered seven hits in nine scoreless innings and Masaki Yamaguchi went 2-for-3 with a two-run double.
