Former yokozuna Kitanoumi will serve a third term as Japan Sumo Association (JSA) chairman after he was re-elected after a unanimous vote by the JSA's executive committee on Monday.
"I feel a sense of renewal. I have always said improving sumo on the dohyo (ring) is the most important thing and will keep the interests of the fans at heart," said Kitanoumi, who took over as chairman in 2002.
For the first time in 10 years, no votes were cast for the 10-member executive board or the three supervisor posts as there were only the same number of candidates up for election.
Musashigawa will likely take over the No. 2 post as the head of business operations on Wednesday.
The post was previously held by sumo elder Futagoyama, who died last summer.
