The X League champion Obic Seagulls scored four touchdowns in the first half en route to a 47-17 romp over Hosei University to win their first Rice Bowl in seven years on Tuesday.
Running back Takuya Furutani, who was named the most valuable player, scored five touchdowns at Tokyo Dome, featuring a pair of goal rushes in the fourth quarter and accumulated 246 yards for the most in the history of the national championship.
Hosei, which was aiming for its first-ever victory, closed the gap to within 11 with a touchdown in the third quarter before Obic shored up its defensive line and put the game out of reach.
The Seagulls won their third overall title, including when they were part of the Recruit organization.
It was the second year in a row that a corporate league team won the national championship, improving the overall record against the students to 12-11.
