JEF United Chiba announced Friday the retirement of former Romania midfielder Gabriel Popescu. Popescu, 31, joined Chiba from South Korean club Suwon Bluewings this year and scored one goal in seven J. League first-division games. He was in the Romanian squad in the 1998 World Cup finals in France and was capped 21 times for his country.
