Top-seeded Satoshi Iwabuchi defeated No. 2 seed and fellow Davis Cup player Go Soeda 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (8-6) in the final to win his first singles title at the national championships Sunday.
Iwabuchi completed a double when the 30-year-old veteran and Toshihide Matsui beat Soeda and Tasuku Iwami 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the men's doubles final at Ariake Colosseum.
"It seemed that I was the only one who hadn't won this title in my generation of top players, so I wanted to win so badly," said Iwabuchi, who made his first appearance in the tournament in 1992.
