National collegiate champion Hiroyuki Akimoto scored a series of ippon victories Sunday to win the men's 66 kg competition at the Kodokan Cup national weight-class championships.
Akimoto, a 19-year-old Tsukuba University sophomore, capped his run of impressive wins by pinning Kazuyuki Oyamada onto the mat 4 minutes, 21 seconds into the final at Chiba Port Arena for his first Kodokan Cup title.
In other men's weight categories, Satoshi Ishii of Kokushikan University won his second straight 100-kg crown with an ippon victory over Takeo Shoji, adding to the title he captured last year as a high school student.
Seigo Saito won the 90 kg for the third time while Hiroaki Takahashi prevailed in the over 100-kg class for his first title in three years and third overall. Shinjiro Sasaki, Masato Inazawa and Shinya Yoshinaga triumphed for the first time at 60 kg, 73 kg and 81 kg, respectively.
