National record holder Toshinari Takaoka and Yumiko Hara, fresh from winning the race in Nagoya in her marathon debut, head the list of 10 runners named Monday for the marathon races at this summer's World Athletics Championships.
Fukuoka winner Tsuyoshi Ogata and Mari Ozaki, runnerup in the Osaka women's marathon, also received the nod as the Japan Association of Athletics Federations announced its selection of five runners each for the men's and women's races in Helsinki in August.
Wataru Okutani and Satoshi Irifune also qualified in the men's field.
In the selection for the women's field, the 23-year-old Hara made an impressive marathon debut with her surprise victory Sunday in the Nagoya International Women's Marathon in 2:24:19.
The JAAF turned to two other runners from the Nagoya race -- runnerup Megumi Oshima, who finished six seconds behind Hara, and third-placed Ryoko Eda.
