ARLINGTON, Texas -- Japan's Ichiro Suzuki ripped a two-run single in the fourth inning of the Seattle Mariners' 5-4 loss to the Texas Rangers on Saturday to post his 250th hit of the season, just seven shy of George Sisler's all-time major league mark.
Ichiro became the first major leaguer since Chuck Klein in 1930 to reach 250 hits. Sisler set his record of 257 in 1920 with the St. Louis Browns.
The right-fielder's effort helped Seattle to an early lead, but it wasn't enough to stop Texas, which moved within two games of first-place Oakland in the American League West race with eight games to play.
