Grand champion Asashoryu quickly pushed out Kokkai on Monday, extending his winning streak on the second day of the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament.
The Mongolian yokozuna is the favorite and only top-ranked wrestler in the tournament. He has won four straight Emperor's Cups this year and is looking to make it five in a row.
Only three others have won five or more in a row since the current six annual tournament system began in 1958.
In the day's final bout at the Ryogoku Kokugikan, Asashoryu dominated top maegashira Kokkai with a combination of quickness and strength, twisting the Georgian around and then flipping him into the crowd.
In other major bouts, the ozekis had mixed results.
Kaio made quick work of rising star No. 3 maegashira Hakuho to stay undefeated at 2-0. Hakuho, a 19-year-old Mongolian, was 1-1.
Chiyotaikai lashed out at Kotomitsuki with his trademark straight-arm thrusts before hauling the komusubi into the dirt with a yank to the head.
Tochiazuma also stayed apace with the leaders by fending off a feisty Tamanoshima. The ozeki threw No. 2 maegashira Tamanoshima off balance and then bulldozed him out.
However, ozeki Musoyama suffered a second loss. In a match of power wrestlers, komusubi Kyokutenho outmuscled Musoyama, lifting the struggling higher-ranked wrestlers out of the ring by the belt. Kyokutenho went 1-1.
Kotooshu's promising start to his first tournament in the top division came to end with a loss to Takanowaka.
The 21-year-old Bulgarian tried to hold his ground but was shoved onto his back, sliding to 1-1. No. 12 maegashira Takanowaka improved to 2-0.
