Daiei Hawks pitcher Toshiya Sugiuchi, who broke both his hands when he slugged a dugout bench to vent his frustration, has been fined 1 million yen for his unruly behavior, officials of the Pacific League club said Friday.

The 23-year-old left-hander, who underwent surgery and was released from a Fukuoka hospital the same day, has also received a 10-day suspension for letting his temper flare earlier this week at Fukuoka Dome.

Sugiuchi started in a game against the Lotte Marines on Tuesday but allowed seven runs in two innings. Unable to control his anger, he slammed his fists into his team's dugout bench, breaking bones in both his hands.

He is expected to be sidelined for the next three months.

Sugiuchi posted a 10-8 record last season before he recorded two wins and was named most valuable player in the Japan Series in Daiei's championship over the Hanshin Tigers.

This season, however, the third-year Sugiuchi has gotten off to a troubling start and is 2-3 with a 7.23 ERA after nine games.
