Japan saw its hopes for a berth at the Athens Olympics evaporate on Friday after it fell to its fourth straight defeat in a 3-0 loss to Canada in the men's final qualifying tournament for this summer's games.
The Japanese team was seeking its first Olympic appearance in three Olympics but was simply no match for the Canadian squad, which overpowered the hosts 25-15, 25-17, 27-25 at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
In other matches, France maintained its unbeaten streak with its fifth straight victory in a 3-0 rout of Iran while China plowed down Algeria 3-0. Australia outlasted South Korea 3-1, as both teams moved to 4-1 records at the tournament, which ends Sunday.
