Top-seeded Venus Williams was forced to pull out of the Toray Pan Pacific Open on Friday with an injured leg, while defending champion Lindsay Davenport overwhelmed Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova to advance to the semifinals.
Former world No. 1 Williams withdrew just before her quarterfinal match against fellow American Chanda Rubin at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
"I originally had the problem during the Australian Open," said Williams. "The pain is in the right leg below the knee. It makes it hard to move and is painful when I put weight on it."
