Yokozuna Asashoryu is apparently in need of another lesson in etiquette after he was absent from a funeral held for the former head of the Takasago stable. The Mongolian grand champion returned to his homeland without notice and missed both the wake on Sunday and Monday's funeral service for former komusubi Fujinishiki, who died last Wednesday.
Takasago said the 23-year-old, who made headlines earlier this year when he broke sumo taboo by pulling countryman Kyokushuzan's topknot, lacks everyday common sense.
"Weddings and funeral services must be carried out to the letter. I thought that he had common sense about such matters but he still has a lot to learn," said Takasago.
"He lacks awareness. The things he does outside of sumo are unacceptable."
