HAYAMA, Kanagawa Pref. -- Australian Peter Gilmour won the 2003 Nippon Cup yacht race Sunday, prevailing over Magnus Holmberg of Sweden.
The regatta, part of the International Match Race Sailing, Swedish Match Tour, saw 12 teams compete.
Gilmour, who formerly skippered the past Nippon Challenge America's Cup entry for the Pizza-la team and the Seattle-based One World boat in this year's America's Cup challenger series, boosted his point standing to lead the overall match race series, which next moves on to Long Beach, Calif.
Holmberg, a former Olympic sailor and European champion, as well as skipper of the Victory Challenge 2003 America's Cup entry, trails Gilmour in the match race series.
