Rank-and-filer Kotomitsuki is likely to miss the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament next month due to an injured right elbow, stable master Sadogatake said on Friday.
"It looks like it'll be difficult for him to compete at the meet. The doctor said he'll be out for at least two months," Sadogatake said of the former ozeki hopeful.
Should the No. 2 maegashira miss the entire 15-day tournament, which kicks off at Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium on July 6, he will be demoted to the juryo division for the autumn basho in September.
Kotomitsuki hurt the elbow on the fifth day of the summer meet last month and underwent surgery on May 20. He is rehabilitating the elbow but has yet to resume training.
