DETROIT -- Ichiro Suzuki hit his first leadoff homer of the season and went 3-for-5, coming just a triple short of the cycle, as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Detroit Tigers 6-3 on Saturday.
Ichiro connected off Nate Cornejo's second pitch of the game for his fourth drive of the season, a shot to deep right, for his seventh career leadoff homer and saw his average boosted to .310 before the day was through.
After grounding out in his next at-bat, Ichiro slapped a one-out double to center field at Comerica Park. He scored for the second time on Bret Boone's three-run homer in the same frame and drove in the final run on a single to center in the eighth.
Suzuki had his third three-hit game in May and posted two or more hits for the ninth time this season.
Shigetoshi Hasegawa relieved starter Jamie Moyer with two out and two on in the seventh and, after walking a batter, ended the threat on a groundout to second. He allowed one hit in 1 1/3 scoreless innings while Kazuhiro Sasaki retired the side in the ninth with two strikeouts for his sixth save and second in two days.
