Jubilo's Brazilian forward Gral struck twice to highlight J. League champion Iwata's 3-0 victory over Emperor's Cup winner Kyoto Purple Sanga in the Xerox Super Cup on Saturday at Tokyo's National Stadium.
The win in the season's curtain-raiser match was the first crown for Jubilo's new manager Masaaki Yanagishita.
"We couldn't win in the A3 tournament but we had some good plays there and I knew we would play better today," said Yanagishita.
Jubilo, which had failed to impress the fans with its winless bottom-of-the-table finish in the A3 Mazda Champions Cup two weeks ago, took control of the game when Kyoto started to run out of gas in the second half.
Toshiya Fujita scored first for Iwata in the 63rd minute. Gral scored his first goal in the 73rd minute and added one more three minutes from time.
