Hideki Matsui, who officially signed a three-year, $21 million contract with the New York Yankees two weeks ago, will leave for the United States next Monday ahead of the start of spring training, baseball sources said Wednesday.
Matsui will spend several days in New York before moving to Tampa, Fla., where he is to have workouts at the Yankees' training facilities until the team's spring training begins there on Feb. 18.
The slugging outfielder is scheduled to hold a press conference Monday at Narita airport before his departure, which will put him in Yankees pinstripes after 10 seasons with the Yomiuri Giants.
The Yankees will face the Toronto Blue Jays on the road in their regular season opener on March 31.
