The new deal made Matsui the third highest-paid active player in Japan behind Norihiro Nakamura, who recently opted to sign a free agent deal with the Kintetsu Buffaloes, and Yomiuri Giants infielder Kazuhiro Kiyohara.

The 27-year-old shortstop also became the highest-paid player in club history following yet another impressive season.
