Hideki Matsui had an outdoor workout session Thursday afternoon amid ardent media attention a week after reaching a deal to join the New York Yankees.

In his first outdoor workout in nearly two months, Matsui jogged and played catch without swinging a bat for about an hour at the Yomiuri Giants' training facilities in Kanagawa Prefecture.

"I took it easy but it's better than not doing anything at all. I have to prepare myself for the things to come and today was just the first step," Matsui said. The three-time Central League MVP declared free agency from Yomiuri last month and reached an agreement on a three-year, $21 million deal with the Yankees last week.

He is waiting to hear from Yankees officials regarding the date for the official signing of the contract in New York.
