Japanese figure skater Miki Ando became the first woman to successfully perform a quadruple jump in an official competition Saturday at the Junior Grand Prix Final while compatriot Yukina Ota came from behind to win.

Ando, a 14-year-old junior high school student from Nagoya, executed a clean quadruple salchow that had only been performed by a handful of male skaters, marking a landmark development in women's figure skating.

Defending champion Ando finished third after the free skate, moving up from fifth place in an error-filled short program. Ota also leapfrogged two skaters to become the second Japanese winner in as many years.
