Hiroyuki Tomita capped an outstanding weekend by winning the rings title for the second year in a row in the apparatus finals of the Chunichi Cup international gymnastics meet Sunday.
Tomita, who completed a sweep of the major domestic all-around gymnastics titles Saturday, put in a sparkling display and earned 9.612 points to edge Evgueni Krylov of Russia (9.512) at the Nagoya Sports Complex. Meanwhile, national teammate Naoya Tsukahara had no difficulties prevailing on the horizontal bar, defeating Takehiro Kashima with 9.462 points.
Akihiro Kasamatsu took advantage of Kashima's absence in the pommel horse final to win his fifth title with 9.625 points.
Tomita was second with 9.512.
Evgueni Podgornyi of Russia accumulated 9.475 to take the parallel bars title while Guard Young of the United States emerged victorious in the vault with 9.212 points.
In the women's disciplines, Elena Zamolodchikova of Russia, the winner of two apparatus gold medals at the Sydney Olympics, won the vault with 9.512 and compatriot Lioudmila Ejova triumphed for the second straight year on the beam with 9.525. Romania's 16-year-old Ioana Petrovschi, the all-round winner Saturday, outscored Zamolodchikova to win the uneven bars and Alona Kvasha of Ukraine topped the floor exercise.
