Judoka Ryoko Tamura is set to announce her engagement to baseball player Yoshitomo Tani of the Orix BlueWave, sources close to the Olympic and world champion said Friday.
The sources, commenting on a report that Tamura and Tani are planning their marriage next autumn, said an engagement ceremony for the pair has been arranged.
Tamura neither denied nor confirmed the report. "I can't speak about it now at my discretion," Tamura said during a training session prior to this weekend's Fukuoka international tournament, where she will return from an eight-month layoff.
Tamura, 27, won the women's 48-kg gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Games while the 29-year-old Tani finished the 2002 season with a .326 batting average and led the Pacific League with 41 stolen bases.
