Sydney Olympic gold medalist Makoto Takimoto defeated Takuji Ono in extra time in the 81-kg final to win his fourth title at the Kodokan Cup men's weight-category national championships on Sunday.
After finishing level with Ono on points after five minutes of regulation time, Takimoto secured his first title in four years in the extra period when he overcame the collegiate weight-category champion for a yusei win.
Tatsuaki Egusa also needed extra time to see off Masato Uchishiba in the 60-kg final for his first title while Takeo Shoji took the 100-kg honors for the first time after beating Shinta Kojima.
Uchishiba had produced the shock of the day when he beat Atlanta and Sydney Olympic champion Tadahiro Nomura in the semifinals.
