Takaharu Nakajima set a new meet record and overcame two-time Olympic medalist Hiroyasu Shimizu on his way to winning the men's 1,000 meters on Sunday to complete a double at the Makomanai invitational speed skating competition.

Nippon Sport Science University student Nakajima, who prevailed in the 1,500 on Saturday, came home in 1 minute, 13.64 seconds at the outdoor rink to follow up on his victory at the single-distance national championships last month.

Yusuke Imai came in second in 1:13.98 but Shimizu, who said he woke up with sore muscles a day after winning his season debut in the 500, finished down in seventh with a time of 1:15.41.
