Hidemasa Tanaka overpowered heavily favored Masahiro Takamatsu in the men's 73-kg final to capture his first title at the Kodokan Cup men's weight-category national championships on Saturday.
Tanaka upended Takamatsu, champion at the 1999 tournament, with an "okurieri-jime" choking technique to score an ippon win in just 55 seconds at Keishicho Budokan in Tokyo.
Tomoo Torii won the 66-kg final by defeating Katsuhiro Kitagawa for his third title and first since 1999 while Saturday's other honors went to Hiroki Tsutsui and Hiroaki Takahashi.
