David Smail outclassed fellow overnight co-leader Kim Jong Duk with yet another solid round Sunday, winning the Japan Open by four shots for his first title on the Japanese tour.

New Zealander Smail negotiated the Shimonoseki Golf Club's tricky course in constant rain as he shot a 3-under-par 67 on his way to a 9-under 271 total and the winner's paycheck of 24 million yen.

The victory in one of the Japanese tour's majors also gave the 32-year-old a five-year exemption.

Kim, who has won three tour titles in Japan, failed to gain ground in a round of two birdies and three bogeys for 1-over 71 and finished alone in second at 5-under 275.

Katsunori Kuwabara and Katsuya Nakagawa both had 67s and were tied for third at 276.
