The Yokohama F. Marinos have fired Brazilian manager Sebastiao Lazaroni after a string of poor results has seen the club slump to 13th place in the J. League second-stage standings, officials of the club said Tuesday.
Yoshiaki Shimojo, who had a short stint as caretaker manager before Yokohama hired Lazaroni in July last year, will take over managerial duties for the remainder of the season.
Under the 52-year-old Lazaroni, Brazil's national team coach at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, Yokohama won the 2001 Nabisco Cup and led the standings for most of this season's first stage -- losing just once -- before finishing runnerup to Jubilo Iwata.
