Wide receiver Nobutaka Horie scored on a 68-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Daisuke Takahashi in the second quarter as the Seagulls beat the Onward Skylarks 19-3 Friday at the Tokyo Dome in the X League's 2002 season opener.
The Seagulls dominated the game as their defense held the Skylarks to only 34 yards on the run and 65 yards in the air. On offense, Horie, who played in the Arena Football League this spring, caught four passes for a team high 122 yards while Takahashi completed 17 of 28 passes for 224 yards.
The Seagulls took a 7-0 lead after Horie scored with 8:27 left in the first half. Both teams had a field goal in the third quarter, but the Seagulls extended their lead to 13-3 on Toshikatsu Kida's second field goal of the day.
Running back Takuya Furutani added a touchdown on a 1-yard rush with 5:59 left to put the game away.
