Chris Barnes, a three-time PBA champion, averaged 246.62 points Thursday to take the lead in the opening round of the 20-million yen Japan Cup bowling tournament.
The Dallas native won six of eight matches at Tokyo Port Bowl, gaining 180 bonus points to go with his total pinfall of 1,973. A total of 32 professional bowlers from the United States, Japan and South Korea are taking part in the four-day tournament.
The U.S. PBA leads this series with 15 victories to two for the Japan PBA.
Tommy Delutz Jr. of Flushing, N.Y., was second with a 233.50 average and 1,868 total pins.
Hugh Miller, winner of last week's Dream Bowl 2002, had to settle for 18th place with a 213.75 average and 1,710 total pins while pre-tournament favorite Parker Bohn III was in 13th place.
