Japan midfielder Alessandro "Alex" Santos began a trial with Charlton Athletic on Tuesday with the hope of signing with the Premier League club.

Santos, who arrived in London with an official from his J. League club Shimizu S-Pulse, took part in a two-hour session behind closed doors at Charlton's New Eltham training ground.

Charlton manager Alan Curbishley said it was too early to decide whether to offer a deal to the Brazilian-born Santos.

"We will be having a good look at Alex over the next few days and he will have the opportunity to do the same to us," Curbishley said on the club's Web site.

"There's a free week in the Japanese league this week, which has given him the opportunity to come over and given us the chance to have a look at the possibility that something can be done in the future."

Santos, J. League Player of the Year in 1999, arrived in Japan in 1994 as a high school student and obtained Japanese nationality last November.
