Toru Taniguchi played it safe in the wet and windy conditions in the first round of the Tamanoi Yomiuri Open golf tournament Thursday and emerged the leader with a 7-under 65.

Taniguchi carded seven birdies without a bogey in some tricky winds sweeping the Yomiuri Country Club to claim a one-stroke advantage over Hirofumi Miyase and Taiwan's Lin Keng-chi.

Aching Bando ahead

NAKATSUGAWA, Gifu Pref. (Kyodo) Takayo Bando, still worn out from her come-from-behind victory last week, overcame her aches and exhaustion Friday to fire a 4-under-par 68 for the first-round lead in the Apita Circle-K Sunkus Ladies golf tournament.

Bando, who ended a five-year title drought with her win at the Suntory Ladies Open last week, carded five birdies against one bogey over the U Green Nakatsugawa Golf Club's 6,361-yard course for a one-shot advantage over Rie Muruta and Kaori Yamamoto.
