Catcher Ryohei Kawamoto drove home the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning as Asia University edged Waseda University 2-1 in the final of the national collegiate baseball championship Wednesday.
Kawamoto lofted a flyball to deep center at Tokyo's Jingu Stadium with one out and runners on first and third, giving Asia University its first national title in two years and fourth overall with the "sayonara" victory.
Asia University senior and right-hander Hiroshi Kisanuki, who struck out 14 in the final while allowing six hits over the distance, was named the most valuable player of the annual tournament.
