Kazuo Matsui and Alex Cabrera homered and Koji Mitsui had a solid start Monday to help the front-running Seibu Lions to a 5-3 victory over the Daiei Hawks in the Pacific League.
Seibu got aboard on a wild pitch by Akichika Yamada (4-3) in the first inning before Matsui, who went 3-for-5 on the evening, followed with his ninth homer of the season and Cabrera hit his 14th to make it 3-0 in the fourth.
Ken Suzuki stretched the lead to 5-0 on a two-run double in the sixth before Daiei pulled two runs back in the bottom half.
Mitsui (4-1) allowed two runs on seven hits in 6-2/3 innings as the Hawks sank to their third loss in a row. Kiyoshi Toyoda worked the ninth for his ninth save.
Marines 4, Buffaloes 1
At the Osaka Dome, Chiba Lotte drove in two runs in the first inning on Kintetsushortstop Masahiro Abe's throwing error and preserved the lead the rest of the way.
With one out and runners on first and second, Abe threw wildly to second on a potential double-play grounder by Frank Bolick, allowing both men to score. Derrick May followed with an RBI double to cap the inning to give Lotte a 3-0 lead.
Fighters 7, BlueWave 2
At the Tokyo Dome, Sherman Obando homered to break a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning and Chris Seelbach tossed a six-hitter over the distance as Nippon Ham downed the Orix BlueWave.
Tatsuya Ide, who has slumped since mid-April, hit his first homer in 11 games -- a solo shot in the third -- to knot the score before Obando's go-ahead solo blast the next frame.
The Fighters sealed the game on Toshihiro Noguchi's grand slam in the eighth. Seelbach (4-3) posted his first complete game in Japan and earned his first win since April 14.
