Yokozuna Musashimaru barreled over Toki just in time to remain unbeaten Monday but ozekis Kaio and Musoyama both were toppled to their first losses of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament.
The Somoa-born grand champion floundered forward of the charge but quickly regrouped and used his brute strength to force the top-ranked maegashira over the raised ring on the second day of competition at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan.
Toki (0-2), who eventually wrenched Musashimaru down on his belly near the edge, had already backed over the ring to hand the win to the yokozuna in the day's final bout.
Musashimaru, who is seeking to capture his 11th Emperor's Cup and his second straight title, moved to 2-0 in a 10-way tie with wrestlers who remained undefeated.
Osaka tourney runner-up Kaio got caught napping when he allowed Tochinonada to take control of his belt and send him sprawling to the dirt with a one-handed arm grip.
Meanwhile, ozeki Musoyama raised himself a little too high after the face-off and was easily escorted over the edge by the rampaging second-ranked maegashira Tosanoumi.
At other ozeki ranks, Tochiazuma quickly disposed of Takanonami, applying a bear hug to muscle the No. 2 maegashira out in a matter of seconds while Chiyotaikai shoved over Aminishiki to hand the top-ranked grappler his second loss.
Ozeki candidate Asashoryu clamped on to the inside of Takanowaka's thigh before dumping the third-ranked maegashira to the dirt as the saucy sekiwake completed another clean sweep for the Mongolian trio in the makuuchi division.
Earlier, former komusubi Kyokushuzan misdirected an attempted drop kick on Kaiho but managed to wrench down the No. 8 maegashira for his second win and Kyokutenho, a No. 4 maegashira, twisted sixth-ranked Kotonowaka to the clay to move to 2-0.
