OSAKA -- World silver medalist Koji Murofushi could only muster the day's second best distance in the men's hammer throw Saturday and failed to win his third straight title in the IAAF Japan Grand Prix track and field meet.
Murofushi, owner of the national record of 83.47 meters, led after the second round at Expo stadium in suburban Osaka but had to settle for 79.12 meters, failing to surpass the 80-meter line for the second straight meet this season.
Hungary's Adrian Annus claimed the victory with a throw of 80.10 while Olympic and world champion Szymon Ziolkowski of Poland took fifth with a mediocre toss of 76.81.
In the women's 5,000 meters, Kayoko Fukushi crossed the finish line third in 15 minutes, 4.54 seconds, just 0.87 second shy of a national record.
Yoko Shibui, Japanese record holder in the 10,000 meters, finished fifth in 15:18.92.
Benita Willis of Australia set a meet record of 15:01.44 to win and Leah Malot of Kenya trailed home second in 15:04.16.
