Japan midfielder Shinji Ono sprained his right ankle in Feyenoord's 1-0 loss to Graafschap Doetinchem in the Dutch first division Thursday, but the team doctor said the injury was not serious.

Ono was substituted midway through the second half of the match, in which Ruslan Valeev's 66th-minute goal knocked Feyenoord out of contention for the Dutch league championship with two matches left to play in the season.

"I sprained my ankle when I tried to turn around when receiving a pass, but I think the injury is relatively minor," Ono said.

Feyenoord's team doctor said he will see if Ono's ankle is swollen Friday, but added that the injury does not seem serious enough to keep him out of Sunday's game.

The defeat dashed Feyenoord's hopes of overtaking league leader Ajax Amsterdam, which has 67 points from 32 games, seven clear of its Rotterdam rival.
